What is “purpose”? Why the need for purpose discovery? How can you discover your purpose? Well, I will go with something simple and understandable on the definition of purpose. Purpose is the reason why a manufacturer makes a product. Your purpose is the ‘why’ God sent you to this world, at this time and for a reason which only you can attend to uniquely.
Subsequently, purpose is fulfillment-the peak of satisfaction you derive from what you do, regardless of what you get or don’t get in return. When you love what you do, a feeling of acquaintance to the things that bring you satisfaction, your motivation wouldn’t be externally driven but internally inspired.
Most times, we overemphasize purpose without talking about the process of purpose. Purpose has a process. It is a process of discovery.
You don’t desire purpose. Likewise, you don’t acquire purpose like you acquire things. You discover purpose. Yet, the process of discovery is work; I mean real work.
Many don’t discover purpose because they hate work. The work to purpose discovery is your responsibility. It is a work not found in things, people, and circumstances. This work is in YOU. The work is on yourself.
Most times, when people achieve a thing after hard work, they feel complacent. A good percentage of them see no reason for investing more, aspiring more, and doing more on themselves.
Many ask the question, what exactly is my purpose? Let me be blunt with you. I can’t tell you what your purpose is. You can’t know your purpose by asking others. The truth is, I can’t know your purpose. However, I can show you how to find your purpose.
PATHWAYWAY TO PURPOSE DISCOVERY
There are pathways to purpose discovery. These are:
- Purpose discovery by knowing who you are
- Purpose discovery by knowing what you do
- Knowing who you do it for
- Purpose discovery through knowing what the people need
- How will it change the people
1. PURPOSE DISCOVERY BY KNOWING WHO ARE YOU
“Known thy self.”
Greek philosopher
The knowledge of yourself is the first work you ought to do for purpose discovery. You will need to know who you are and deal with self-doubt. You could have a natural inclination to socialize with people or enjoy solitude, think deeply or talk freely, teach expressly or listen carefully, be creative in art and craft, smile at nature, or grow at oppression. These and many more make the unique YOU.
Since knowing yourself is the easiest work to purpose discovery, it is also the easiest route to struggle when you embrace imitation of wanting to be like someone else. Even though you can learn from others, you can’t be like them because you aren’t them.
Your existence is evidence that this generation needs something your life contains. There is a vacuum on earth in this generation which God saw and realize only you can fit in, not someone else. So live out your natural abilities.
2. PURPOSE DISCOVERY THROUGH KNOWING WHAT YOU DO
What is it that you love to do?
The sense of achievement, a nudge to want to do more and more and better at something you love to do, points the direction to your purpose. Look at your life five years ago. Consider those things you did for people, your community, and your school from years past.
Now, look ahead to ten years from now. Look at those things you will be doing for your community and the people around you. As long as what you do bring you fulfillment, irrespective of the size at which you did them or the place at which you did them, as long as it comes with excitement, achievement, peace, fulfillment. That points to your purpose.
Subsequently, purpose doesn’t have to look so BIG or conspicuous. It just only has to make IMPACT wherever it is being expressed. Do those things constantly, frequently, and for everyone who comes in contact with you, and very soon, your deed to serve, bless, give, and make people better off will announce itself.
The main point here is that Purpose is a constant. It comes with permanence around what you do before now and after now. I have a friend whom there’s one thing I know he talks about often, teaches about often, and gets angry about often. You, too, check yourself. What is that one thing people know you talk about often? The one thing people know about you.
3. WHO DO YOU DO IT FOR (Your audience)
Purpose is all about others. It is about what you do for people. Identifying your audience is most paramount in purpose discovery.
Even Jesus’ message was to the Jews, His own audience. It had to be another man who knew his own purpose was to bring the message of Jesus to ALL who believes; the Jew, gentiles, Arab, you, and me. Do you see how disastrous it could be if you don’t discover your purpose, let alone your audience? Many lives will be in danger if you don’t find your audience.
4. PURPOSE DISCOVERY THROUGH KNOWING WHAT PEOPLE NEED
If there’s no need, then you aren’t needed on earth. There’s a need that you are the only one who could meet that need by default. The answer to someone’s need is in you. The song that will deliver many from addiction, suicide and pain is in you.
Subsequently, the book that will transform a generation is in you. The words that will bring peace on earth is on your lip. Express yourself freely and make available to people what they need, which you have.
5. HOW WILL IT CHANGE THEM
Certainly, if what you have, do or give does not change anybody, then it isn’t your divine purpose. Purpose comes with an ability to transform, make a new, restore sanity and sanctity to humanity. Purpose brings repentance and when I say repentance, I mean a change in thinking.
However, any purpose not restoring orderliness to creation isn’t a divine purpose at all or, at best, an abuse of purpose, for no product fulfills its essence of production outside the producer. Also, no man fulfills purpose outside God.
There’s something many of us seem not to understand even after purpose discovery.
That you find your purpose doesn’t mean now you have arrived at your destination. Purpose discovery is actually a journey that you keep walking, working out and waking up to daily.
However, there are times you get tired along the path; naysayers wanting to talk you out, times when you aren’t hitting the target hard, yet one thing keeps you on the track of purpose. This is called PASSION. Live your life passionately, especially after purpose discovery.
