Life will be meaningless, directionless and worthless without purpose. You must understand that you are on this planet to fulfill a definite purpose. Therefore, discovering this purpose is essential to living a fulfilled and happy life.
No one discovers purpose outside of God. Many people have died without discovering what God wants them to do in life. The best humankind could do without God is to speculate using trial and error. However, Purpose is specific and can only be found in God. It is not something you guess about but what you discover by revelation.
The question of purpose had become a mystery to many. To understand what purpose is, you must first answer the following three questions of life:
- Who am I?
- What am I to do?
- Why am I here?
Who am I?
The question of who you are is that of your identity. If you do not know who you are, situations, life pressure, and society will give you an identity of who you are not. So first, you must know where your identity is rooted.
The Bible says,
“So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.”
Genesis 1:27
Your true identity is rooted in God. You look like God in beauty, character and personality. The same ability in God is what He had deposited into your spirit at creation. So, you are not less human. As He (God) is in heaven, the Bible says so are you on earth (1 John 4:17). So, God had placed you here on earth as an extension of himself.
What am I to do?
What am I to do in life is the question of my responsibility here on earth. You have a responsibility and that’s to do God’s will. Anything you engage yourself here on earth void of God’s will becomes a struggle. Where God’s will is, God’s grace is available.
Consequently, anything you try to do by yourself without God’s grace will require too much of your effort to sustain it. It is unwise to keep doing what God had not called you for or what you do not have the grace to do. This is why the Bible says that the Labor of a fool wearies him (Ecclesiastes 10:15). It is unwise to labor in what God has not called you to do.
Know what God’s will for your life is and stay within His will.
Dear friend, there is no better way to identify God’s will for your life than His word- the Bible.
Why am I here?
The question of why am I here is the question of purpose discovery.
You are not an accident on earth. There was something specific you must do with your life on earth. God created you now and in this generation because there is a problem on earth that you have been designed to solve.
Your purpose is defined from creation, but it is up to you to discover it. Purpose discovery is not in trying to do many things. Purpose discovery is to find your assignment here on earth and stay with it. But then, how can you discover your purpose when you do not know what it means?
What is Purpose?
The purpose of something is the intention for which something was created.
It is why a manufacturer makes a particular product. Everything the product needs to function well has been imputed into it. No product tells the manufacturer what to do.
Likewise, God’s creature cannot tell the creator how to live life. You need to find God to discover your purpose.
Your purpose in life is God’s intention for creating you.
God saw a problem on earth at this time. So, he made someone like you with the grace, strength and ability to solve the problem. Most times, many people do not discover God’s deposit in them. Hence, it becomes impossible to find their purpose.
Everything you need for a purposeful life is deposited in you. Your character, personality, skills and uniqueness are all for the fulfillment of your purpose on earth. You cannot just live life by chance or speculation. It would help if you lived intentionally.
How to Discover Purpose
“If a man has not found something worth dying for, such a man is not fit to live”
~ Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Below are the four (4) major ways to discover your purpose in God:
- You can Discover Purpose through Serving
- Find your Purpose in God’s word
- You can discover your life’s purpose through Prayers
- By Building Destiny relationships
1. You can Discover Purpose Through Serving
Your purpose is in the action you take towards solving a problem. This is called serving.
Purpose finds you where you are doing something to make life meaningful for others. Many people do not discover their purpose because they find it difficult to serve others without monetary gain or something in return. I want you to understand that life is not all about money.
The truth is when you discover purpose, money and many other beautiful things of life will be added to you. So, in your quest for purpose, serve and do not always expect in return.
Use your skills, talents, and ability to bless others.
You can serve by volunteering in your community, church or any organization you find yourself.
2. Find your Purpose in God’s word
Everything about you is in God’s word. God is not just thinking about your purpose now. Your purpose had been defined even before you were born.
The Bible says concerning Jeremiah that;
“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations.”
Jeremiah 1:5
Invariably, God had determined your purpose even before you were born. Now, your responsibility is to search it out in His word. The psalmist knew about a book when he said;
“Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.”
Psalms 139:16
Henceforth, I want you to make your bible your best companion. Give more attention to diligently study the bible so as to know what the Lord had said concerning you.
3. You can Discover your life’s purpose through Prayers
Since no man can discover purpose without God, that makes prayers essential. The art of prayer is communication to God for divine direction, instructions and ability. There are many amazing packages in and around your life that you know nothing about unless you pray.
Prayer opens your spirit to discover the hidden treasure in you. Therefore, make prayers a lifestyle today and you will hear God tell you what you need to know about your purpose and assignment on earth.
4. By Building Destiny relationships
There are people strategically positioned around your life to bring you into destiny fulfillment. The story of Esther and Mordecai is a perfect example of purpose discovery through association or relationship.
There was a time in the Bible when the Jews were being oppressed in a strange land and no one could deliver them. However, Mordecai, Esther’s first cousin challenged her, saying;
“For if you remain silent at this time, relief and deliverance for the Jews will arise from another place, but you and your father’s family will perish. And who knows but that you have come to your royal position for such a time as this?”
Esther 4:14
Dear reader, you need that destiny relationship that would push you to fulfillment in life. Whenever you find yourself in an association that inspires you, believes in you and wants you to be more, keep such an association. They are essential for purpose discovery and fulfillment.
Lastly, finding your purpose in life is the ultimate for living. You cannot just be careless with your life. It would help if you lived passionately and purposefully by following all the outlined points we have discussed. Remember, there is so much God has deposited in you that you must not carry to the grave. Die empty!
